Texas GOP Announces Results of First Statewide Poll Since Election

Austin, TX, Release: November 14, 2022 — For Immediate Release

The Republican Party of Texas announced the results of the first statewide poll since election day, which show a plurality of Texas Republican primary voters support Ron DeSantis to be the party’s presidential nominee in 2024, and an overwhelming majority oppose the Republican-controlled Texas House continuing the practice of appointing Democrats to leadership positions.

When asked who they supported in the 2024 Republican primary for President among a list of five candidates who are all being discussed as potential contenders, 43% of respondents selected Gov. Ron DeSantis and 32% chose former President Donald Trump. Gov. DeSantis’s support jumps to 66% if Trump declines to run. All other choices had support in the single digits.

When asked if the speaker of the Texas House should appoint all Republicans to leadership positions, or continue the practice of appointing some Democrats to leadership positions, 70% agreed all leadership positions should be filled by Republicans. A majority of GOP primary voters indicated this would affect their vote for their own House member, as 66% of respondents were less likely to support Republicans who vote to allow Democrats to hold leadership positions.

Chairman Matt Rinaldi commented on the poll stating, “Election day made it clear that Texas is getting more red, not less. This poll shows that GOP voters would like to see their hard work rewarded and we at the Texas GOP will fight to ensure that happens and their voice is heard.”

The survey was conducted by CWS Research from November 12 – November 13, 2022, through a series of interactive voice response calls, and online surveys delivered via SMS messages. 1,099 survey respondents were randomly selected from a demographically proportionate sample of voters who are likely to participate in the 2024 Texas Republican primary election. Weighted demographics include age and gender. The survey has a ±2.96% margin of error with a confidence level of 95%.
